The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents Jimmy Cliff, the legendary reggae icon, music pioneer, Grammy Award winner, and recent inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The heartbeat of Jamaica will resound in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall, as the Rivers of Babylon run through South Florida, celebrating the Wonderful World, Beautiful People of Miami! For the first time in nearly 20 years, Cliff returns to Florida, performing his greatest hits plus new tunes from his latest album, Existence. “Last year we celebrated Jimmy Cliff ‘s tremendous musical legacy with the blockbuster musical, The Harder They Come, embraced by the vibrant Caribbean community of South Florida and all roots, rock, and reggae lovers,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “This season, it is only fitting that we present the man himself – the voice of a nation.”
Grammy Award-winning music icon Jimmy Cliff was reggae’s first international star and remains its greatest living ambassador, having taken the music of Jamaica to all corners of the globe. CLIFF was among the very first to bring reggae music to a worldwide audience with his performance and soundtrack for the international hit film. With more than 20 best-selling albums to his credit and countless accolades, Cliff’s songs are poignant, uplifting, spiritual, and timeless. He had his first major hit song at age 14 and, since then, his classic tunes have been covered by music luminaries including The Rolling Stones, Cher, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, and The Neville Brothers, just to name a few. Bob Dylan called Cliff’s song “Viet Nam” the best protest song he had ever heard. His role as a reggae pioneer is second only to his brilliant song-writing – “Many Rivers to Cross,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Sitting in Limbo,” “Rivers of Babylon” – channeling the rhythm and soul of Jamaica into universal anthems.
Jimmy Cliff is the only living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honor that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts and sciences. This past March, Cliff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has toured the world from Africa to England, and maintains a studio in Kingston, Jamaica where he is currently at work on his new album, Existence, slated for release this fall. Cliff was reggae’s first international star and remains its greatest living ambassador, having taken the music of Jamaica to all corners of the globe.
