This summer, June 3rd through August 12th, in a quiet Miami neighborhood and within Coral Gables Congregational Church’s (CGCC) intimate, historic Spanish-revival style setting, concert goers have the unique opportunity to be awed and entertained by some of the music industry’s most talented and revered classical and jazz figures. These artists will perform and delight audiences in celebration of the CGCC Community Arts Program 25th Summer Concerts Series season!
The Summer Concert Series has entertained more than 60,000 people since it began in 1985. The Series has grown into a valued tradition and, more recently, part of a Community Arts Program that also provides music education to children within its Conservatory for the Arts.
“The Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables Congregational Church,” says Shelton G. Berg, University of Miami Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. “The Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit.”
25th Anniversary Summer Concert Series Line Up:
June 3rd, 2010: Preservation Hall Jazz Band, is hailed as “stunning, joyous and alive”. Direct from the Crescent city and the historical birthplace of the band which opened in the French Quarter nearly a half a century ago: the band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission and music to nurture and perpetuate the distinctive art form of New Orleans Jazz.
June 17th, 2010. Mark Kosower, newly-appointed Cleveland Orchestra principal cello, is one of the outstanding cellists of his generation. Acclaimed by musicians and critics alike for his instrumental mastery and deep musical integrity, he is the distinguished recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and was recently awarded a SONY Grant through the Salon de Virtuosi in New York.
July 1st, 2010: Ann Hampton Callaway, singer and songwriter, is also known as an insatiable creative spirit. As a champion of the Great American Songbook, she has made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. She is best known for Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical Swing!
July 15th, 2010: Awadagin Pratt, classical pianist, is acclaimed for his musical insight and intensely-involving performances in recital and with symphony orchestras. He began studying piano at the age of six. Three years later, he also began studying violin. At the early age of 16, he entered the University of Illinois where he studied piano, violin, and conducting. He subsequently enrolled at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he became the first student in the school’s history to receive diplomas in three performance areas: piano, violin and conducting. In recognition of this achievement and for his work in the field of classical music, Mr. Pratt recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Johns Hopkins.
July 29th, 2010: Nicholas Payton, jazz trumpeter, made his recording debut in 1994 as a leader with From this Moment. Since then, the trumpeter has been lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. Payton continued to hone his craft working with such jazz legends as Doc Cheatham (on their Grammy Award-winning 1997 eponymous duo), Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, and Ray Brown. In 2003, he boldly moved beyond the straight-ahead. He shocked the jazz world with his adventurous CD Sonic Trance, an exhilarating plugged-in outing infused with elements of hip-hop, electronica, and effects-driven trumpeting.
August 12th, 2010: Ramsey Lewis, jazz pianist, is a captivating and multiple Grammy award-winning pianist and composer. Mr. Lewis has been referred to as “The Great Performer,” a title reflecting his performance style and musical selections that display his early gospel roots and classical training. They are coupled with his love of jazz and other musical forms which have made him one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists.
