September 2009.
Miami City Ballet dancers are back from summer break and in the studios rehearsing for an exciting line-up of performances which begin in October. Among the many dances being rehearsed is Paul Taylor’s signature work Company B, being staged by former Paul Taylor Dance Company member Patrick Corbin.
Company B is a carefree dance set to World War II hits by the Andrews Sisters (“Rum and Coca Cola,” “Boogie Woggie Bugle Boy,” “Oh, Johnny, Oh!”) contrasted with the melancholy realities of soldiers at war. Patrick Corbin danced for Paul Taylor from 1989-2005 and was one of his most celebrated members. Corbin worked with Miami City Ballet last season staging Mercuric Tidings and the company is thrilled to have him back again to set Company B.
Corbin has been featured in five PBS Great Performances between 1988 and 2004 and the 1998 Academy Award nominated documentary Dancemaker. In 2001, he was the recipient of the New York Performance Award (Bessie) for Sustained Achievement with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. He founded CorbinDances his own company in 2005.
Miami City Ballet also announced that the following dancers have been promoted: Alex Wong to Principal Soloist; Daniel Baker and Carlos Quenedit to Soloist; and Cindy Huang, Helen Ruiz, Elizabeth Smedley, and Nicole Stalker to Corps de Ballet. Two guest artists Katia Carranza and Yann Trividic will rejoin the company for some productions. Carranza and Tividic both performed full-time as principal dancers for Miami City Ballet for several years.
Joining the company this season as Miami City Ballet School Apprentices are: Nathalia Arja, Renan Cerdeiro, Alexandre Ferreira, and Yoalli Sousa Sanchez.
