Miami International University of Art and Design From Aug 11th through Aug 24th, 2007Miami International University of Art and Design (MIU), located in downtown Miami, is hosting a special exhibit that will open to the public on August 11th, 2007 from 7: 00 to 11:00 p.m. The exhibition was put together by DIY:MIA, an independent grass roots organization dedicated to community arts opportunities and spaces. This organization launched a word of mouth campaign that called for art demonstrating the belief that the creation and publication of one’s own design is the practice of a free society. Ultimately, they seek to provide opportunities for public interactions by the means of art. The goal of the show is to celebrate and educate others about the presence of the “do it yourself” culture as well as impermanent and street art. This art form acts as a catalyst in forming a community of like-minded artists and individuals who are committed to grass roots arts efforts. DIY:MIA received submissions from artists worldwide and is continuing the evaluation process during the exhibit. Works of art range from stickers to graffiti, handmade books and zines, posters, photographs, short experimental films and indie clothing and are exhibited in a salon-style fashion.
