Laura Kina and Young Generation 3 From Jun 9th through Jul 21st, 2007Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts opens two exhibitions this June presenting Laura Kina’s solo show in the main gallery space together with the summer group show Young Generation 3: Die Young Stay Pretty. Also on view at the gallery there is an on-going solo show by Federico Nessi entitled Spiritual Cramp. Laura Kina’s mixed media paintings explore dreams of paradise using Hawai’i as a tropical muse to explore pattern, color, figuration and abstraction. Beyond the gloss and allure of palm trees and plate lunch, the works in this exhibition delve into a more complicated history using images from popular culture, textile design, and Kina’s own family history as sugar cane plantation workers on the Big Island of Hawai’i to focus on immigration/migration, heritage tourism and Orientalist fantasies. In tradition of the gallery’s Young Generation series, the gallery proudly presents Young Generation 3: Die Young Stay Pretty curated by José Carlos Diaz. Artists featured: Erica Magrey, Manny Prieres, Michael Scoggins, Luis M. Alonzo-Barkigia, Vicenta Casañ and Felice Grodin. “Are you waiting for the reaper to arrive? Or just to die by the hand of love? Love for youth, love for youth. Die young and stay pretty” Inspired by the Blondie song of the same name and the film Logan’s Run, this group of artists live for the moment in this carefree summer ensemble.
