Meet photographer Ellen Kaplowitz April 22nd, 2007Vietnam and its people come alive in this book by photographer Ellen Kaplowitz. It is a slideshow and talk that will take us on a visual journey behind the headlines and the preconceptions of the past. From village huts to the neon bustle of Ho Chi Minh City, Kaplowitz shows us a Vietnam where tradition still thrives in the changing social landscape. The foreword is by Bernard Kalb, veteran journalist, who covered the war in Vietnam for CBS news and reported for the New York Times. The text is by Jeffrey Hantover, who has written about Vietnamese art and culture in publications worldwide. Vietnamese proverbs, poems and prose stretching back eight centuries evocatively underscore the continuities amidst change. Ellen Kaplowitz has traveled around the world for 20 years photographing people and places with an emphasis on Asia as well as many other remote areas. Her focus is to document these cultures before what is unique to them is lost. In explorations to China’s Guizhou Province, she photographed the Miao and Dong people and in Quinghai Province’s grasslands, the Tibetan nomads, festivals and shaman rituals. Her images are shown in many galleries, including Plum Blossoms, in New York and Carl Schlosberg’s Fine Arts, in Los Angeles. Kaplowitz has also exhibited in The Field Museum, The Newark Museum, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and The Museum for African Art.
