Anna Gaskell’s Short Film

at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens From Mar 15th through Jun 1st, 2007Known for her enigmatic and evocative images, New York-based visual artist Anna Gaskell has created a short film installation titled Still Life, based upon her immersive experience at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, Florida. Gaskell’s film will be displayed at the museum from March 15th through June 1st, 2007, as part of Vizcaya’s Contemporary Arts Project. This new initiative brings contemporary artists to Vizcaya, re-establishing the environment of creative dialogue that characterized the National Historic Landmark estate’s conception and construction nearly 100 years ago. In the short film, Still Life, shot entirely at Vizcaya, Gaskell takes viewers through the site’s lush historic gardens as though in a game of hide-and-seek. The artist explains that her film explores ideas about the relations of time, space, memory, amnesia, and déjà vu. “When building Vizcaya, James Deering commissioned some of the top artists of his day, including Stirling Calder and Gaston Lachaise, to create new pieces to combine and contrast with his sizable collection of historic artifacts.
