Behind Haiti's Curtains at Bass Museum

June 25th, 2006The Bass Museum presents a night Behind Haiti’s Curtains: A Tapestry of Poetry, Dance, Drums and Fashion with several performances. Starting with Then Maroons, considered to be some of South Florida’s most prolific and thought-provoking poets, the Maroons offer an insight into the beauty of Haiti that is rarely portrayed in the media. With spoken word poetry in English, French, and Kreyol they stay true to their mission to educate through entertainment. The poets, Prosper “Makendal” Sylvian Jr., Berwick “Underscore” Augustin, Jesler “Deep ‘n Thought” Mezidor, and Roland “Eros” Cherasard, will be presenting poems and small skits that tackle issues facing the Haitian and Haitian-American communities. There will also be a Haitian inspired fashion show featuring Haitian designer Guerda Pierre for Michou, who uses her culture as a muse. There will be showcase of higlights from her latest collection to the accompaniment of Haitian music. A full time fashion design instructor at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Pierre continues her own clothing line that specializes in bridal, evening, culture wear, and swimwear. The afternoon will culminate with traditional Haitian drumming by Joseph Senatus and a lively display of yanvaloo, gongo, and kata folkloric dancing.
