April 8th through May 27th, 2006Alonso Art presents Observatorium, an exhibition of new works by Carlos Estevez, a Miami based artist original from Cuba. The exhibition will be on view from April 8 through May 27, 2006. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2006, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and a catalogue will be available. The works in this exhibition sprung from a simple game. Just for fun, the artists started selecting and cutting out images from books and magazines and later proceeded to rearrange them on paper. As he was cutting and pasting, some ideas started to emerge at random and they led him almost immediately to new works incorporating drawing and painting that took him to new three-dimensional pieces. What started out as a game quickly became a serious project and the use of ready-made images soon became a sort of revelation to the artist. Playing with them, manipulating their messages, taking advantage of their contents to enrich both his personal introspection and his comments on life, became a way of learning and research very effective and fun as well. The result of this process consists of 27 collages on paper as well as 3 three-dimensional pieces that incorporate collage and sculpture. The collages encompass a wide array of images ranging from the realms of Science, Mechanics, Architecture and History to the realms of Politics, Finance and Celebrity, all blending in with the ideas and forms that usually shape the artist’s work.
