In partnership with Miami Jewish Film Festival, JMOF-FIU present this final film in a three-part series featured in the movie posters on view in the current exhibition, CINEMA JUDAICA: The War Years, 1939-1949. TO BE OR NOT TO BE (United Artists, 1942) is a comedy, set in occupied, devastated Poland, and replete with running jokes about the new Nazi concentration camps in Poland and Hitler’s saturation of bombing of Warsaw, earned its Jewish writer-director Ernst Lubitsch harsh criticism. However, the movie has many defenders who have suggested that humor was the only weapon a displaced Berlin Jew like Lubitsch possessed, so he used it against the Nazi characters in the film.
