From the director of the beloved Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight trilogy – one of the most important American directors of his generation, Richard Linklater – comes another tour de force experiment in capturing the shifting of time. Boyhood, which had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Festival to near unanimous critical praise, stars Ethan Hawke (Gattaca), Patricia Arquette (Lost Highway) and newcomer Ellar Coltrane. Boyhood is an epic of everyday life, a daring project filmed over 12 years with the same cast literally growing older along with their characters. A moving, groundbreaking story of one boy and his extended family, Boyhood makes its Miami Premiere at the Coral Gables Art Cinema starting Friday, July 25.
Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. It starts with the main character at six years old, an innocent in the world of his parents’ disintegrating marriage, and ends as he leaves for college. In between are snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between. The stuff of everyday life becomes surprisingly transcendent in director Linklater’s hands, and is set to an indelible soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. Boyhood is both an achingly real time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch without thinking about one’s own personal journey, with all the bumps in the road and the joys of life, and moving on. Indiewire calls Boyhood, “Epic in scope yet unassuming throughout, Linklater’s incredibly involving chronicle marks an unprecedented achievement in fictional storytelling.”
