Miami Beach Cinematheque. Dec 5th, 2008. China: The Rising Tide premiers Dec 5th, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. Robert Adanto’s The Rising Tide shows the world how China’s contemporary artists are making sense of their crazy “brave new world”, the improbable mash-up of totalitarianism and capitalism gone wild. An often surprising and thought-provoking documentary, the featured artists throw down a collective glove to the rest of the world and declare their Sino-centric Renaissance. The rest of us better make an effort to grasp what their work is about, or get out of the way.
The Rising Tide was shot in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen in the summer of 2006 and completed in October of 2007 and was recently part of CHINA NOW in the United Kingdom, as part of Constant Stream: China 08 at the Royal College of Art in London, where it screened with a film by acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. The film will be followed by Q&A with director Robert Adanto and artist Zhang O. All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.
