August 22nd, 2008. 7:00 p.m. Join the Wolf Pack and the Association of Yale Alumni on Friday, August 22nd, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. for a public talk and book signing with Joshua Hawley, author of Theodore Roosevelt: Preacher of Righteousness. The book explores the dimensions of Roosevelt’s politics – its historical context, intellectual sources, practice, and its effect on his era and our own.
While prevailing present-day scholarship contends that Roosevelt’s thinking was of little historical importance, this book offers a fresh and persuasive argument that our twenty-sixth president was underestimated as a thinker. To disdain Roosevelt’s politics is to overlook his important and lasting contributions to the shape of modern America. With considerable eloquence, Hawley portrays Roosevelt as a serious political thinker who inspired social reform, shaped political movements, and accelerated the United States’ transition from republicanism to progressive, modern, liberal politics. "Warrior republicanism" is how Hawley refers to the political science practiced by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Hawley examines Roosevelt’s political thought more deeply than ever before to arrive at a fully revised understanding of his legacy: Roosevelt galvanized a twenty-year period of national reform that permanently altered American politics and Americans’ expectations for government, social progress, and presidents.
