The “3rd Annual Middle School Art Festival” at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame 6 to 12 Prep allowed young artists the chance to experience life as professional artists. Thirty-five pieces of work from Miami-Dade Catholic middle school students will be exhibited through February 22, 2012. The Festival was an opportunity to showcase the value of art in education while giving participants an opportunity to learn what artists typically have to do to get their art displayed. The students first went through the selection process with art teachers selecting work to represent each school and, then, the art work was reviewed by area art professionals. The event, however, was not a competition. Students received a copy of their reviews and an award for their participation. All artwork and young artists were celebrated at a professional gallery style opening reception on January 31st. The participants also received items donated by I.D. Art Supply, Downtown Miami and Around Town Magazine, Aventura.
Trevor Landry, an 8th grade student at the Brother Rice Honors Academy at ACND, was surprised by his natural ability to reproduce an image of Charlie Chaplin. He commented, “It was the first time I ever sketched something like that and I really enjoyed it.” Trevor enjoys art, music, and is looking forward to the track season.
Inez Suen, a festival judge who is an at consultant with offices in New York City and Miami, as well as founder of the International Chinese Fine Arts Council, commented on Trevor’s work: “You have an ability to capture not only the likeliness of Charlie Chaplin, but also you captured his spirit. This is difficult to do – keep up the good work.”
Other art professionals who served as judges were: Sandra Garcia, a welder specializing in bronze and steel sculptures, and welding teacher who offers classes at her studio in Wynwood; Gerry Stecca, nationally-recognized for his installations made from clothes pegs, but also well known for his paintings and murals; and Dr. Mercedes A. Quiroga, an ACND alumna and Campus President of the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, Broward College.
The young artists that represented Archdiocese of Miami middle schools were from: Our Lady of the Lakes, Miami Lakes; St. Agnes, Key Biscayne; St. Lawrence, Miami; St. Mary, North Miami; St. Patrick, Miami Beach; Sts. Peter and Paul, South Miami; St. Rose of Lima, Miami Shores; and Brother Rice Honors Academy, Miami.
The ACND Gallery of Art (established in 2007) is offered as an expression of solidarity with its neighbors in the historic Buena Vista, Brentwood and Little Haiti sections of the upper east side of Miami including the recently developed areas surrounding the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the Design District.
