Karen Peterson and Dancers (KPD) is Florida’s only full-time dance organization that features choreography performed by dancers with and without disabilities and has been a role model for the artistic and disability communities in Miami Dade County for twenty-nine years. Under the dedicated direction of Artistic Director Karen Peterson, the company provides educational programming for students with special needs and provides inclusive rehearsal, performance and touring opportunities for adult professional dancers and choreographers with diverse abilities.

3:45 pm: Keynote- Bodies in Motion: Through the eyes of Judith Smith – Judith Smith, Founder and Director Emerita of AXIS Dance Company will muse on the origins and growth of Physically Integrated Dance in the USA and how its rise has been supported and informed by both happenings in dance and in the civil rights movement for people with disabilities. Followed by Q&A
5:00 pm: Panel 1- Three generations of Physically Integrated Dancefeaturing Judith Smith (Founder and Director Emerita of AXIS Dance Company), Laurel Lawson (Dancer, Kinetic Light) and Jerron Herman(Dancer, Heidi Latsky Dance). Moderated by Jenni Person, Managing Producer, MDC Live Arts.
– Physically integrated dance is still relatively a new form of dance. Three generations of dancers will discuss how Integrated Dance has evolved from generation to generation. What has changed? What has remained the same? How are intersectionality and identity politics shaping the future of integrated dance? Followed by Q&A
6:15 pm: Panel 2 – Arts, Advocacy and the Future of PI Dance featuring Rashmi Becker, (Founding Director, Step Change Studios), Alice Sheppard(Artistic Director, Kinetic Light) and Dwayne Scheuman (Dancer, KPD). Moderated by Karen Peterson, Artistic Director, Karen Peterson and Dancers.
– An international view of Integrated Dance. What are the similarities and differences between the UK and the USA? How does advocacy shape the field? When and how can dance be used as a political or social tool? Followed by Q&A
7:30 pm: The Miami/London Dance Exchange – preview performance presented by Karen Peterson and Dancers and Step Change Studios as part of Miami Dade County’s International Cultural Exchange Program. Followed by Q&A.
