New World School of the Arts High School Senior Showcase

From June 1 - 30, 2012.

An impressive High School Senior Showcase culminates NWSA's 25th anniversary celebration at Artseen, in the heart Wynwood, featuring the work of 28 talented college-bound artists. The works, representative of the various art disciplines emphasized in the visual arts program, encompass painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installations.

Among the exhibitors are twin sisters Jessica and Erika Suhr, who have collaborated in other shows including "A Piece of Me" during Art Basel. For their final showcase the twins have created an installation, comprised of a black and white drawing with projected imageryfrom their childhood in their native Venezuela. Jessica Suhr was named a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and will be traveling to Washington D.C. in June to receive her honors from the hands of President Barack Obama. She and her sister will be attending Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in the fall to continue their art education and training.

Another must-see artwork is a series of more than a dozen elongated ceramic figures by Maximillian Gonzalez. In spite of the distorted proportions of his work, Maximillian brilliantly infuses his deformed subjects with gentle human-like features.

Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA, confirmed that all graduating students have been accepted to renowned universities across the nation to continue their field of study, the majority of them with full scholarships - “In total, the high school senior class of 2012 has received more than $8.2 million in scholarship offers to attend the top arts universities in our nation and we’re still getting word that more offers will be extended to our students,” stated Cuesta. Some of the universities that will be claiming NWSA students include Cooper, MICA, Art Center, RISD, School of Visual Arts, Kansas City, and Oregon College of Arts & Craft among others.

The exhibition will be presented to the public on Friday, June 1 with an opening reception at the Artseen Gallery, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The show will remain open through Thursday, June 30 and it is free and open to the public. Information about the show is available by calling 305.237.3620.
