Drinking and Drawing: Miami's First Animation Jam

The News Lounge Cafe. July 29th, 2010. 8:00 p.m.

altGet ready for the 2010’s second quarter edition of Drinking and Drawing: Miami, which will take place on Thursday July 29th, 8:00 p.m. at The News Lounge at the 55th Street Station. Brought to you by Miami World Cinema Center Animation in association with Frederator Studios, this edition will be the first one to feature a guest artist. Guest will be famed street artist, Krave.

Powered by Spencer Morin, Drinking and Drawing is an animated session where animators and animation fans get together to draw and mingle. Groups of animators are called up to the drawing area, 10 at a time. Each animator receives 8 blank note cards, as well as the last card from the animator that drew before them. They have exactly 20 minutes to animate their own original segment of the piece as well as tie their animation into the segment being drawn by the person on their right. At the end of the 20 minutes, all of the animators surrender their seats and a new batch is called to the table.  This collective work becomes a short animated film made by dozens of animators all in the span of one unforgettable evening.

"Miami is the perfect place for traditional animation to flourish," explained Spencer Morin, Head MWCC Animation. "In a time where computers continue to own the animation industry, I find that there’s more appreciation for the older forms of animation that are indubitably more tangible and beautiful than the work that has overwrought the box office the past few years. Drinking and Drawing is our way of proving that."

This will be the first time that Drinking and Drawing will have a guest artist, Krave. Locally known as Miami’s most fierce artist, Krave started with graffiti. He then expanded to doing public art projects, commissioned murals and gallery shows. Following the mission of MWCC, of supporting and nurturing local creative talent, Krave is a Miami native that has been working in his hometown for over a decade.
